Justice Warriors Reign!Stage It is a drama education resource. And so much more. It also provides a human development lens though which the most impactful experiences can occur for students ages 9-12. Today’s tip focuses on cultivating the developmental theme of justice in the classroom. Justice involves truth, fairness, and moral integrity. For children at this developmental stage, a just classroom is one where rules, boundaries, and procedures apply equally to everyone and are considered the “right” thing to do. Creating this environment fosters trust, respect, and accountability. One effective approach? When a boundary is broken, ask students why it happened. Was it the right thing to do? Why or why not? Encouraging inquiry and reflection into moral dilemmas helps them understand and take ownership of their behavior while developing a deeper understanding of their classmates’ behavior. Avoid imposing your own sense of right on wrong while encouraging students to ask questions that develop their own sense of the concept. This approach can also be applied by parents at home, too. In the four Stage It plays, justice could appear in: Henry V’s siege against France in a “just war” based on a legal claim to the French throne; Othello’s sense of self as a moral agent in executing a necessary punishment; Hamlet’s moral justification in his revenge against Claudius who murdered his father and married his mother; Julius Caesar’s assassination by the conspirators who “liberated” their Republic from a dangerously ambitious power-hungry “tyrant”.
